First Time to South America

This popular itinerary takes you across South Americaºº, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, combining Rio de Janeiro and the Iguassu Falls with Machu Picchu and the wonders of Peru.

Highlights: Rio de Janeiro – Iguassu Falls – Lima – Cuzco – Sacred Valley – Machu Picchu.

Days 1-4

Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro has the most spectacular setting of all the South American cities and really should be on everyone's wish list. Rio is vibrant, immensely friendly and great fun.

We will book a guided tour to Corcovado Mountain with the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer and by cable car to Sugarloaf.

We recommend a visit to the Museum of Tomorrow.

Many first-time visitors to South America like to stay on or near Copacabana beach. Please contact us to discuss the choice of hotels.

Days 4-5

Rio - Iguassu Falls

One of the great wonders of the natural world, these majestic falls are a must for first time visitors to Brazil.

It is a two and a half hour flight from Rio de Janeiro to Iguassu where you will be met on arrival and driven to your hotel.

We thoroughly recommend staying at the Belmond Das Cataratas, right next to falls on the Brazilian side, from where you can follow the paths down to the Falls in your own time.

We will arrange a tour to the Argentina side of the Iguassu Falls.

Day 6

Iguassu - Lima

Optional half-day sub-tropical forest excursion within the National Park and boat journey along part of the Iguazu Canyon.

Alternatively we can offer an excursion to the Itaipu Dam which generates the hydro-electric power that drives Paraguay and the whole of southern Brazil including Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Evening flight to Lima and overnight at an airport hotel.

Days 7-9

Sacred Valley of the Incas

A short flight from Lima will take you to Cuzco where you will be met and driven into the Sacred Valley.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is dotted with villages, Inca sights, Andean markets and offers activities such as white-water rafting and mountain biking.

We usually arrange a visit to the fortress of Ollantaytambo, the concentric terraces of Moray and the salt pools at Maras.

A visitor ticket is included which covers entry to all key sites in the Sacred Valley.

Please contact us to discuss hotels from luxury hideaways and top-notch properties to standard three star level hotels.

Day 10

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is Latin America’s foremost archaeological site a visit to this Inca landmark is always something special and exciting, even for frequent travellers to Peru. What is most remarkable about Machu Picchu is the setting, rather than the quality of the stonework.

Getting there is also an adventure on a fabulous train journey to the local village of Aguas Calientes and by bus up the winding mountainside road to reach the citadel.

Please contact us to discuss the different trains, from the Expedition and Voyager trains to the more comfortable Vistadome and 360o trains, the first class Machu Picchu train or the luxurious Hiram Bingham service.

In conjunction with your guided tour of the citadel we will book the hotel of your choice, from the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge next to the site to the delightful Inkaterra Pueblo Machu Picchu in the local village to cheaper options.

Day 11

Machu Picchu - Cuzco

We will arrange second entry to Machu Picchu if you wish before returning by train to the Sacred Valley of the Incas and by road from there to Cuzco.

Cuzco was the capital of the Inca Empire and is built in the Spanish colonial style upon Inca foundations. Cuzco is friendly, vibrant and exciting and there is always plenty to do here with a good choice of restaurants, cafes and bars. It also has excellent handcraft shops.

Please contact us to discuss hotels.

Days 12-14

Cuzco

The cathedral in Cuzco’s main square, the Plaza de Armas contains a painting of the Last Supper depicting Christ and his disciples tucking into that well-known Peruvian delicacy, guinea pig.

Your visitor ticket will provide entry to all key sites in Cuzco including the fortress of Sacsayhuaman overlooking the city and other sites nearby (Qenqo, PucaPucaca and Tambomachay).

Day 15

Lima

Your last couple of days are spent in Lima, the gastronomic capital of South America.

The colonial centre has been steadily restored over the last 25 years and there are some lovely squares, museums, buildings and churches to visit, notably the Plaza de Armas and the 16th century Santo Domingo church.

The district of Miraflores is today the vibrant heart of the modern city. It is worth visiting the Larco Mar centre for a variety of handicraft shops, restaurants and cafes with great ocean views.
